Unplugged

It was rainy, rainy when we departed Portland on Tuesday morning.

But it wasn't rainy in Maui at all!

I did manage to finagle a morning at the spa . . . a facial, a massage, and the use of the facilities for the day.

We discovered a delightful little bookstore in an alley off the main drag of Lahaina. When I found a book on old dolls, the proprietor of the store, Joanna, asked if I collected dolls. I sort of laughed and said, "Well I wouldn't call it collecting, but I do like dolls, the creepier the better" and I let it slip that I especially liked doll parts -- heads, legs, arms -- disconnected. Joanna mentioned that her mother had collected dolls and she had a bin I could go through, but it would take her a while to dig out the box and asked if I could come back tomorrow. You betcha, I could! And I did . . . but that's my next blog post. In the meantime, here is Joanna's store, Old Lahaina Book Emporium; it was one of those wonderful little used bookstores that winds and twists and just when you think you've reached the end, you turn the corner and there's another room!

One evening we slipped into Lahania for burgers at Cheeseburger in Paradise (thank heavens they had veggie burgers!). But get a gander at the size of Howard's non-vegetarian burger!

A good morning sunrise.

A peek at the arty little upcountry town of Makawao. The gallery is the Jordanne Gallery. Check out Jordanne's art here.

Out of the upcountry and toward Paia.

Off to Kauai on Saturday morning.

love Kauai...beautiful. I lived there for 6 months as a newly wed in '89. If you find hula pie any where...yum. A relative of mud pie, but made with macadamia nut ice cream :)
