Outside the Box II: Escaping the Frame

I was invited by Chris Haberman, a Portland artist, to participate in a group show at The People's Art of Portland. The show is titled Outside the Box: 50 Artists Escape the Frame. I love escaping the frame so I jumped into the fray. We were provided with six boards - five are 8 x 8 (which will sell for $60 each) and one 16 x20 (that we price ourselves). We've had one month to complete our assignment. I was nailing and attaching my final elements just last night and will be delivering my art today. Here's Steph (who is also participating in the show) and I picking up our boards last month.

So many stages of prep! Sanding, painting, plastering, more sanding, staining, waxing, papering, staining, hunting, gathering, sorting, gluing, attaching . . . . .

In the end, I'm pleased with my six pieces: No. 197, Dance, Lost in the Middle, Escape, Timeless Treasure, and Sample.

The show opens Saturday, May 19th, 5-9 pm at Pioneer Place Mall, 700 S.W. 5th Avenue (3rd floor) in downtown Portland, and runs through June 7th.

Wow Dayna, you have really got it going on here. I love the idea of being given a time frame to work in, and also the set price of the items is a cool idea. I'm hoping to have a collection at Alberta St in June for last Thursday. Just finishing the last pieces and deciding on cording, and whether to line all or some of them.
Hope to catch your current show!!!!

Fabulous Dayna! I hope that the next time I'm in Portland I can see some of your art in person . These pieces are wonderful and inspirational and fun.

Dayna, you astound me! Such a prolific artist. I wonder, though, does it kill you to actually use some of your treasures in the work you know will be sold? (I'm such a hoarder; I even have fabric I can't cut up!)

Joanna, such a great question that I'm going to post a response on my blog. The short answer is yes, it does kill me to use some of my special treasures. I'm sometimes happy when a piece doesn't sell because that means I either get to keep it, or at least keep it for a while longer until the next time I offer it up. It's easy when I have a lot of something, but most of my elements are one of a kind discoveries -- but creating makes me so happy, that I work through my desire to save.
