Travel Post #22: Poble Nou Cemetery

I love cemeteries and Poble Nou in Barcelona is one of my new favorites. We learned about it in the travel guide, Secret Barcelona, where they write:

Behind the walls of the Poble Nou cemetery, over five meters high, lies a good part of the history of 19th-century Barcelona. . . . The cemetery was opened in 1775 in an attempt to solve public sanitation problems. . . . The old cemetery brings together various architectural and aesthetic styles arranged in almost chronological order.

I loved it for the history, the texture of the aged walls, the crypts, the angels, the broken crosses. I also loved that we visited on a day that it was packed with families cleaning and visiting the graves of their loved ones.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Kiss of Death was created by J. Barba as a tribute to a dead son. According to Secret Barcelona:
In 1991, it was one of the works most commented on in a Berlin exhibition on the theme of eroticism(!).
