Anatomy of a Creepy Doll: Meet Molly

Anyone that knows me at all or has been to my studio knows that I love me a good creepy doll. I collect and display them throughout my studio and never get rid of them. But when Renee of Stone Buddha in Silverton put out a call for her Creepy Doll Show, how could I resist. So I chose Molly, a recent addition to my menagerie of lost dolls, to be the centerpiece of an old wood box. The box was also a recent acquisition and came filled with vintage shoe repair bits: an assortment of heels, rusted nails, and all kinds of push pins and tacks. Turned upright, it begged to house a doll. Enter Molly with her poor little gnawed off hands.

Molly is ready for her debut. Her story goes like this:

It was a tragic accident -- a day at the park that went horribly wrong . . . the merry-go-round was removed a short time later. Molly has been on a quest ever since, devouring medical books and articles on transplantation, implants, and prostheses. Molly hopes that one day science will catch up with her dream, her dream to become a surgeon.

Preparing Molly for her journey to Silverton.

Saying good-bye to Molly after dropping her at the store.

Stone Buddha is located in the heart of Silverton and the Creepy Doll Show runs through the month of October.

Funcky Fresh

Last Friday I spent the day in my daughter Melissa's third grade classroom. The project for the day? Painting and embellishing cloth dolls. The plan is for the kids to next write a poem or short story about their doll and then both the doll and their writing will be on display for the school's art show in June. But Friday was dedicated to arting up the dolls. What a grand and glorious day it was!

A few close-ups of the completed dolls:

The last time I was in Melissa's classroom was November of last year and Howard did the art project with me (check out Art Rocks for photos of what we did then). When I arrived for this visit, the kids began handing me thank you cards they had written. Here's a sampling (p.s. my grandkids call me Bammy, or Bam, for short, and that is what the school kids call me as well).

Lisa Has a Friend

Lisa, my baby doll, has a new playmate: Amy. My friend Shelby acquired a baby doll and we got the two dolls together last week. They were introduced in the trunk of Shelby's car (where else?). My grandson, Emmett, who named Lisa and my mannequin head (Lucy), named Shelby's doll Amy. Shelby doesn't even know this bit of information yet, and interestingly enough, Amy is the name of my daughter and Emmett's mother. I think it's the dark hair. So for the purposes of this post, I'll refer to Shelby's doll as Amy. By the way, Lisa is a size bigger than Amy, so we figure Lisa is four and Amy is three. But they still liked each other and want to be friends.

Shine

On my recent post about discovering and bringing Lisa home, my oldest grandson, Jackson, left a comment:

Could you post some funny pictures of Mommy and Emmett with Lisa? Love, Jackson

My response to Jackson? OF COURSE! And here they are . . .

Amy gave Lisa a sponge bath, took off her stained and ratty dress, and gave her a pair of her leggings.

When it was time for bed, Emmett said he wanted to sleep with Lisa, so he got her into his bed and adjusted her for sleep.

But amazingly enough, Lisa wasn't quite ready for bed. She slipped on a pair of glasses and asked if we had any art books she could look through!

Emmett got her calmed down . . .

. . . but decided he didn't want to sleep with her after all, so onto the love seat she went (she didn't have a temperature by the way, Amy was just soothing her to sleep).

And after a good night kiss, both Emmett and Lisa settled in for the night.
